I get that she's f*cked up over the suicide of her son, but even that element was introduced too late to garner any sympathy from me because I'd already decided that I didn't like her. However, there's almost no one like that in 'Mare of Easttown.' Even Kate Winslet's character is unappealing but I didn't find much interest there because her performance was so flat. I loved 'Manchester By The Sea.' I thought Casey Affleck's performance as Lee was terrific, in large part because even though he was a very unhappy character, he didn't treat other people like shit.ĭespite his life being really difficult, Lee still tried to be decent and kind.

I was reminded of Kenneth Lonergan's 'Manchester By The Sea' as an example of how to tell this kind of story without constantly pummeling the viewer in the face with cruelty, violence and existential dread. The scene with the baby in the hospital room was particularly prurient and ultimately meaningless to me. When they do things that are supposed to surprise, they come off like tragedy-baiting or red herrings because SO little has been done to establish their characters' motivations. For one thing, there are too many characters such that few are developed. All the characters are deeply unhappy and critically flawed, they cannot communicate in any useful way, and the overwhelming aura of hopeless brutality made me feel like I'd been emotionally and psychologically assaulted after getting through the second episode.
